Frigidaire Fridge: What Water Filter? (Branded Vs Compatible)

Published on:

If you have a Frigidaire refrigerator which is plumbed in, with a water and ice dispenser, it’s likely that it also includes a water filter.

This filter is what ensures you always have a safe and clean supply of water, free from chemicals and pollutants.

Unfortunately, due to their nature, these parts are considered consumables and need to be replaced every 6 months or so – so if that time has rolled around, here’s a guide to make sure you get the right one and get your dispenser back up and running quickly.

What Water Filter Do I Need for My Frigidaire Refrigerator?

The easiest way is to take out your previous filter and check what type it is. This way, you’ll be sure to get the right one.

Alternatively, you can enter your serial number into the Frigidaire site, and it’ll tell you which filter you need.

If you can’t find the serial number, check our FAQs at the bottom of the article.

Where Can I Buy a New Water Filter for My Frigidaire Fridge?

It’s recommended that you replace the filter every 6 months, and you can get them from most appliance stores and lots of online outlets.

To be sure you’re getting a genuine filter though, the best option is to buy directly from the manufacturer.

If you’re prone to forgetting, they also offer a handy subscription option – so you’ll get a reminder every 6 months to replace the filter when the new one arrives in the post.

There’s also the option to save by bulk-buying a few at a time.

Types of Frigidaire Water Filters

There’s more than one option, but only one will work with your appliance.

Below is a quick guide to part numbers and names – in case one or the other has rubbed off your old one.

Branded Vs. Compatible

With Frigidaire water filters, their tagline is “compatible isn’t comparable.”

As with other items – you’re spinning the roulette wheel if you go for a non-branded option.

That said since filters are to be replaced every 6 months, if you are stringent about checking verified customer reviews prior to purchase you might be able to save a bit of cash.

However, if you prefer reliability over risk and have the cash to spare, you’d be best with the branded option.

How to Find a Compatible Replacement Water Filter for Frigidaire

If you want to ensure top-quality water with no sediment, chemicals, or harmful impurities, then either check you’ve got a reputable compatible option (the NSF stamp is the gold standard) or get the Frigidaire branded option.

Are There Risks to Using a Compatible Vs. Branded Filter?

Yes and no. As with everything, provided you check that the compatible version offers the same level of filtration as the Frigidaire branded filter and you check all the reviews from previous buyers, you should be absolutely fine.

Worst case scenario – you can remove it and replace it with a different version or the branded one.

Benefits of Frigidaire Water Filters

Frigidaire branded water filters are certified to remove 99.9% of the most common and harmful contaminants that may be in your tap water supply.

This includes the removal of:

  • Chlorine
  • Heavy metals
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Chemicals
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • BPA
  • Pesticides & insecticides

They do this through a 3-step activated carbon filtration system:

  1. Stage One: Physically traps sediments and contaminants
  2. Stage Two: Traps lead and volatile organic compounds
  3. Stage Three: Uses chemical reactions to remove other substances (i.e., chlorine)

FAQs

Where can I find my Frigidaire refrigerator serial number?

This varies. However, it’s usually on a sticker or metal plate in one of these places:

  1. On the inside wall of the refrigerator
  2. On the side of the door (only visible when the door’s opened)
  3. Behind one of the refrigerator drawers
  4. On the side or back of the appliance

If you’re struggling but still have the owner’s manual handy, it will be on that too.

Are Frigidaire refrigerator water filters universal?

No. Each refrigerator requires a specific filter since they’re different shapes and sizes – so you need to be sure to get the right one.

The easiest way to do this is to check which type your old one is and get a new one to match.

Are all Frigidaire water filters the same?

As mentioned above, they’re not universal. There are at least 7 different types depending on refrigerator type and fitment, so it’s important to get one that’s the same as what you’ve already got installed (provided it’s worked since it was last changed).

How long do Frigidaire water filters last?

Frigidaire recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months. However, your usage might mean the filter replacement light turns on slightly before or after that.

If your water starts to taste funny or dispense more slowly than normal, it’s probably a sign that the filter is in need of replacement.

How often should I replace the water filter?

Frigidaire recommends replacing the filter every 6 months, but that’s based on average use – so if you’ve got a large family you might need to replace it more often.

Can I use a non-brand water filter in my Frigidaire?

The manufacturer’s tagline answer for this is ‘compatible isn’t comparable. Frigidaire Genuine filters are highly regulated and generally offer a higher level of filtration than non-branded filters – so you’d run the risk of poorer water quality or installing it only to find it’s incompatible.

How do I find the water filter in my Frigidaire refrigerator?

Most water filters are located in the top right of the refrigerator compartment. If you’re struggling to find it, refer to the owner’s manual, which will show you where it is and how to remove it.
